Fuckaz

I have been written up by CJAM [SEE CORRECTION BELOW] for playing this great song on Wake the Town on April 27, 2012. It was not the first time we played this song, and hopefully it won't be the last.

As the title suggests, this song contains material that some may find offensive. Listener and reader discretion is strongly advised.

FUCKAZ -- Music by the Bug/Lyrics by the Spaceape:

All them people who hold the keys
But continually close doors inna people dem face
Fi all them fucking people who think (?) that
Because you no have what them have, you is weak
Fi all them fucking people who lie, continuously lie
Just so them can stay right (?) wit' dem there, haha

Fi all them fucking people who ignore blatant facts
Just so them can maintain an order beneficial only to themself
Lord God!
Fi all them fucking people who smile inna yer face
Only because them wan' see who there behind you, haha

Fi all them fucking people who believes all is fair an' equal
Ignorant of the fact that nuttin' no go so
Fi all them people who never wan' see a man succeed
Improve an' better 'im bloodclaat self in life

Fi all them people who believes that charity begins at 'ome
Look here, mi say look ‘pon the state of your 'ome
Fi all them fucking people who only concern in life
Is to mine our permanent state of hesitancy... believe me

Fi all them fucking people who look by your face
And try to control how the way you run t'ings
Fi all them fucking people who like to see a grown man
Pick up them shit after them, trust mi

Fi all them people whose worthless ambivalence
Leads to nuttin' but frustration and self-obsessed anger
Fi all them people whose gain is my pain
There will come a time in life when only your pain will remain

Fi all them people who use the word 'friend' as an excuse
To carry on with slackness
An' take a whole heap of bloodclaat liberty
Fi all them fucking likkle yout' bwoy who face (?)
They known everything about life,
But them know nuttin', trust me

Fi all them people who full up them yard with pickney
Then come their tooth loose
Them a bawl an' beg me out on the street
Fi all them people whose worthless stupidness
Is only surpassed by the wickedness of other people

Fi all them yout' there who believes that charity begins at home
Believe me... nuttin' begins at 'ome

... space it ilie... come tell the man them about how to run tings
... with our people who take a likkle bit of poetry...
All them fuckers... tell the man them

Fi all them people who face that becau’
you no have what them have , you is weak, haha
Fi all them people who lie, continuously lie
Just so them can stay right with dem there

Fi all them fucking people who ignore blatant facts
Just so them can maintain a order beneficial to themselves
Fi all them fucking people who are smile inna your face
Only because them wan' see who there behind you, trust mi

Fi all them people who believes all is fair and equal
Ignorant of the fact that nuttin' no go so
Fi all them people who never wan' see a man succeed
Improve an' better 'im bloodclaat self in life

Fi all them people who believes that charity begins at 'ome
Trust mi, look ‘pon the state of your home
Fi all them people whose only concern in life
Is to mine our permanent state of hesitancy

Fi all them fucking people who like to see a grown man
Pick up them shit after dem, heh heh
Fi all them people whose worthless ambivalence
Leads to nuttin' but frustration and self-obsessed anger

So, how did we get here and where do we go now?
How did we get here and where do we go now?
How did we get here and where do we go now?
How did we get here and where do we go now?

As with all the lyrics I post here, I invite all readers and listeners to correct any errors in the comments.

CORRECTION: I've been informed that although I received an official e-mail from CJAM, alleging an infraction of policy, with details of time, date, title of song, alleged frequency of the alleged infraction, and a personally delivered reminder of policy, I was not "written up" according to the meaning of "written warning" in CJAM's Discipline Policy. For more details, see the comments.

  1. Hi Martin,

This was the e-mail you received on May 2nd, 2012:

    "Hi Martin,

This is in regards to the April 27 episode of Wake the Town, in particular, the last song of the night, “Fuckaz” by The Bug. While the song was prefaced with a listener discretion advisory, the track contained over 15 instances of the f-word. This steers into the realm of excessive and gratuitous language. As we are currently perceive ourselves to be under scrutiny by the CRTC, it is important that we use discretion in our music selection.

This message is a reminder of policy (attached is the memo concerning on-air obscenities) and in no way a disciplinary action. If you have any questions, let me know.

I hope you did not misunderstand the nature of the e-mail; but you were not written up. Please contact me if you have any questions.

  2. Thanks for posting the write-up, Sarah. We seem to disagree about the meanings of some key words.

I'm using the second definition of "write up" from the Macmillan Dictionary:

"to report officially that someone has done something wrong"

for example: The traffic cop wrote him up for speeding.

    http://www.macmillandictionary.com/dictionary/american/write-up

But that definition is marked as "American" so maybe Canadians have a different meaning for the words. I don't know. I was born and raised in Windsor to American parents, and I tend use the American definitions of words and phrases.

  3. I should clarify that I used the term “write up” specifically in regards to CJAM’s Discipline Policy. This e-mail was not an official report or reported officially to the board. There is protocol under which a written warning is given.
A write up, interchangeably known as a written warning, is the first level under CJAM’s discipline policy. A written warning or write up differs from a policy reminder because if a volunteer receives two written warnings in a twelve month period, he or she will have their volunteer privileges suspended for two weeks (level two).

Your blog post states that CJAM wrote you up for playing this song. If we are going under CJAM’s definition, you did not receive a write up, or written warning.

I’ve included CJAM’s discipline policy below:

    CJAM FM Discipline Policy

CJAM policies are put in place to ensure the highest quality of programming. If errors are made or something is overlooked, a polite reminder and inquiry into the situation will be the case for minor infractions. If a problem persists, further action will be taken depending on the seriousness of the matter.

    Level One: Written Warning
Not filling in log sheets, play sheets, being late/leaving early without notice, failing to meet Can-con requirements, playing a “hit” song, missing a show without at least 24 hours notice (not including pledge drive shows – see level three), not playing station ids or and/or public service announcements scheduled on log sheet, falsifying broadcasting logs, or being disrespectful to other volunteers (which includes Campus Police and individuals who work at the C.A.W. Center Information Desk).

    Level Two: Two-Week Suspension
A volunteer will have his/her volunteer privileges suspended for two weeks upon the receipt of two written warnings in a twelve month period

    Level Three: One Month Suspension
A volunteer will have his/her volunteer privileges suspended for one month upon the receipt of a written warning following a 2 week suspension, or for the following infractions: not playing scheduled pre-recorded material, missing a pledge drive show without two weeks notice, or failing to program a pledge drive show.

    Level Four: Immediate Dismissal
A volunteer will have their volunteer privileges indefinitely revoked upon the receipt of a written warning following a one month suspension or for the following infractions: vandalization or theft of CJAM property, sexual harassment, consumption of illegal substances on CJAM property, broadcasting abusive content in violation of CJAM and/or CRTC policy, smoking in the station or CJAM bashing.

  4. Thanks for the clarification, Sarah.

I wonder what to call a write up that is not a write up, a disciplinary action that is not a disciplinary action.

I'll post a correction on the blog.
