Playlist for Nov. 19, 2010

Scientist is currently touring the UK & Ireland, supporting the soon to be released double album Scientist Launches Dubstep Into Outer Space, due in December from Tectonic Recordings.

On the album, Scientist remixes fresh dubstep tracks by many of the biggest names in the business, including Kode9 & Spaceape, Shackleton, RSD and King Midas Sound.

In the live show, he provides a live dub remix for the "Upsetters" who may or may not be some incarnation of Lee "Scratch" Perry's recording group, who also went by the name "The Hippy Boys" and, most famously, recorded with Bob Marley et al. as "The Wailers." He's supported by such dubsteppers as Pinch, Mala, Pokes and Loefah.

Symarip's "Skinhead Moonstomp" is kind of a cover of Derrick Morgan's "Moon Hop." Roy Ellis a.k.a. Mr. Symarip will be performing at RiotFest in Chicago on October 10th. RiotFest is a 4-day music festival whose blog is here.

The ska blog Marco on the Bass unravels the tangled tale of Symarip. Marco plays bass for ska revivalists Bigger Thomas and tells a good story. He seems to personally know everybody from all the many generations of ska.

And, have you noticed that dub music has taken over the world? And the world has taken over dub music?

Kharag Penpa, who sings on the song Rangzen, is a Tibetan musician. Rangzen is Tibetan for freedom/independence, and the song includes a chant of "Free Tibet."
