"S'pose A Still On Yah": Playlist for April 29, 2011

The headstone & footstone of Scipio Africanus in Bristol.

Scipio Africanus was a slave (named after the Roman general) who died in Bristol in 1720 at the age of 18. He is one of the few slaves in England for whom any record is preserved. Read more about him at Wikipedia. His name is chanted in the chorus of Bristol Roots by Black Roots, which we played for you this week and you can hear it right now by clicking the link to Wake The Town, found just after the playlist below.

Her like will not be here again.

Millicent Todd's "A Man Is Two Faced" is a cover of the American standard "Blues In The Night" (music by Harold Arlen; lyrics by Johnny Mercer). The story of Arlen & Mercer's composition is fascinating, and available on Wikipedia here. The song has been covered by everyone. Here are Peggy Lee & Lou McGarity singing it with Benny Goodman on an old 78:

Shirley & Lee: I'm Gone -- Original Jamaican Sound System Style: 21 R'n'B Scorchers (1952)
Derrick Morgan & Hortense Ellis: I Am Gone -- Trojan Club Reggae Box (Trojan 2000)

I was wrong to say on air that Shirley & Lee "invented ska" in the United States in 1952.

It's just that "I'm Gone" sounds soooo Jamaican. Let's say they invented Jamaican R & B.

New Orleans singing duo Shirley Goodman & Leonard Lee recorded "I'm Gone" with Dave Bartholomew, Fats Domino's producer, and this tune turned out to be such a shining example of New Orleans R&B, it is now well-known as the immediate progenitor of Jamaican R&B.

Still sounds great!
