Go Tigers! Playlist for Oct. 14, 2011

Fans of Mute Beat's In Dub (ROIR 1986) owe it to themselves to get their hands on this fantastic Japanese record from Respect Records. Here at Wake the Town, we're great fans of Reach Out International Records (for evidence, click here) BUT: the ROIR version of this music is simply too quiet, and the Japanese record may not be "much cheaper" but it is definitely "much better"!

Tonight's Dub News features some tracks from records reviewed in the latest Wire Magazine for October 2011. Steve Barker's column is missing this month, so we play records recommended (& or dissed) by Joe Muggs, Adam Harper & Nick Cain.

Mute Beat: Shonen Tiger -- No.0 Virgin Dub (Respect JP 1996)
Little Axe: Keep On Drinking -- If You Want Loyalty Buy A Dog (On-U Sound 2011)

OK Here's the real (?) deal with the Peanie Wallie (aka Peenie Wally) riddim:

The opening bars of the Wailers' "Mr. Brown" do indeed refer to "Peanie Wallie" but it's the Wailers' "Duppy Conqueror" that's actually ON the "Peanie Wallie" riddim. Check it out.
Here's Jackie Mittoo:

Here's the Wailers:

To make matters a little more complicated, the Wailers never acknowledged that they were borrowing Jackie's riddim, so confusion reigns to this day over who came first.
And then, to compound it all, there's a story floating around out there that "originally" this riddim was to be the basis of "Mr. Brown" but it ended up being used for "Duppy Conqueror" instead, which meant that it fell to the Wailers' keyboard player, the great Glen Adams, to come up with new music for "Mr. Brown."
Both songs deal with the supernatural: "Mr. Brown" tells of a coffin, "chauffeur-driven around" by crows; in "Duppy Conqueror," Marley claims that he can get the better of any ghost. The two songs seem to be inextricably linked, hence the confusion (?)
One further correction: the Selected Few's "Selection Train"was released before Carey Johnson's "Correction Train" and should have been played first in tonight's version excursion.
And, last but not least, on a personal note, the spoken word introduction to "Correction Train" is most familiar to me as it was sampled on Dub Syndicate's "No Dog Barks" from the killer album "Stoned Immaculate":

"This is your popular station, where the music comes first. And it's comin' on strong. Strong strong strong!"
